a place steeped in history
Located in Peypin, between Aix-en-Provence and Marseille, the Château de la Roque Forcade is a place steeped in history, a veritable jewel in the heart of Provence. Founded 500 years ago by the Italian General Doria, the estate has preserved its agricultural heritage through the centuries.
The history of the castle is closely linked to that of the region, which is marked by ancient influences. Archaeological finds, such as dishes dating from the 1st century and housed in the Louvre, bear witness to the Roman presence in the area; The Via Aurélia or Aurélian Way, an ancient Roman road linking Italy and Gaul, runs through the estate.
One estate, one castle, one story
The Doria family, of Greek origin, is one of the most illustrious and ancient patrician tribes of Greece. Over the centuries, the estate has witnessed the passing of historic figures such as Emanuele, Lord of Andorra, and Oberto, who bought San Remo. The estate was also marked by the miniature activities of the Roux family in the 18th century.
In 1830, the estate was acquired by Delphine Laure Ricard and, under the management of her son Louis Rostan, it became famous for its cooked wine, Malaga de Provence. Despite the family ties between the Doria and Valdonne families, disputes and changes of ownership were rife. However, it has managed to retain its unique nature and farming activities.
Today, Château de la Roque Forcade is not only a renowned wine growing estate, but also a prestigious venue for events combining tradition and modernity. Visitors can explore a site steeped in history and culture, reflecting the values and know-how of Provence.
The Doria Family
The Doria family, originally called ”de Auria” (from “filiis Auriae”), means "the sons of Auria", and then of Oria or d'Oria.
Legend has it that they descended from Arduin, viscount of Narbonne, who passed through Gènes around 1050 on his way to the crusades. When he fell seriously ill, he was taken into the home of the widow of the De Volta family for treatment. He fell in love with one of the two daughters of the house, Oria (Orietta), and had a son, Ansaldo, who was nicknamed Oria's son.
In 1310, Emperor Henry VII of the Holy Roman Empire granted the family the right to wear the Imperial Eagle.
Today, the bastide bears the name ”Bastide Doria” in reference to the historical origins of the estate.
